How to book the US citizenship test: part of the N-400 interview
Short answer: The US citizenship test is part of your naturalization interview: the USCIS officer who interviews you about your Form N-400 application also gives the English and civics tests, unless you qualify for an exception [1]. On the 2025 civics test the officer asks 20 questions from the list of 128, and 12 correct answers pass [1].
Which civics test you take
The version depends on when you filed Form N-400: before October 20, 2025 means the 2008 test, and on or after that date means the 2025 test [1].
How many questions and what it takes to pass
- 2025 civics test: 20 oral questions from the list of 128; 12 correct answers pass and 9 wrong answers fail [1].
- 2008 civics test: up to 10 oral questions from the list of 100; 6 correct answers pass and 5 wrong answers fail [1].
- You get two attempts: a part you fail at the first interview (English or civics) is retested 60 to 90 days after that interview [1].
Oral or written
The civics test is an oral test: the officer asks the questions and you answer them out loud [1].
The English test has a reading and a writing part: you read aloud one of three sentences correctly and write one of three sentences correctly, and the officer judges your spoken English during the interview [1].
