Oath Prep: US Citizenship Test — Privacy Policy

1. What the app does
Oath Prep helps you study for the civics part of the U.S. naturalization interview with the questions and answers USCIS publishes. Your study progress is kept on this phone.
The app reads one public page from the internet: at most once a day it opens USCIS's “Check for Test Updates” page so that answers which depend on who holds office stay current. It sends nothing about you to that page and has no account to sign in to.
2. Data we collect
The developer collects none. We run no server and receive nothing from your device — not your study progress, not your device identifier, not your usage, not crash reports.
The one exception is advertising, and the developer does not process that either: in the free tier Google serves the ads and may use your device's advertising ID (AAID) and IP address. See §5.
3. What is stored on your device
Your study progress for each question (when it is next due, its review interval and ease, how many times you answered it right or wrong), the questions you saved, the test version you study, the Form N-400 filing date and the interview date if you enter them, the state and U.S. representative you pick from the official lists, your study settings and the daily study reminders you set, with the day a reminder last went off so that it is not sent twice (and a day you skip from the notification), your last 30 test results, simple counters of what you did in the app (shown under Settings, never sent), which boxes of the application checklist you ticked and the official answers last read from the USCIS page with the time of that check (§12 has the details). All of it lives in the app's private storage and is deleted when you uninstall the app.
4. Servers the app talks to
For its own work the app connects ONLY to the official USCIS website, at most once a day and only when the phone is online, to read the public “Check for Test Updates” page:
www.uscis.gov
This is an ordinary public web request over HTTPS, the same one your browser makes when you open that page. It carries no identifier of you.
These official pages open in your browser, and only when you tap their link; the app itself does not contact them:
www.senate.govwww.house.govwww.usa.gov
The review schedule follows SuperMemo SM-2, whose description is cited in the app; the app neither opens nor contacts this address:
super-memory.com
Apart from that, the only network traffic is the advertising and purchase traffic described in §5 and §6.
5. Advertising
This section applies to version 0.1.0 and later. Earlier versions show no ads, contain no advertising library and read no advertising ID.
The free tier shows ads. They are served by Google AdMob; the developer does not choose what is shown and has no direct relationship with advertisers. The formats used are:
- Banner — at the bottom of the screen; it never covers your content.
- Rewarded — only when you tap the offer yourself; it relaxes free-tier limits for 24 hours.
- Native — a card inside the app's own screens, always marked with an “Ad” label.
Interstitial, rewarded interstitial and app open ads are no longer used; versions of the app released before 28 October 2026 also showed these formats.
- Paid members see no ads and no ad request is made — nothing leaves the device for AdMob, and no consent form is shown.
- To select, serve and measure ads, Google may use your device's advertising ID (AAID) and IP address. The developer never reads or stores that identifier; Google is the party that processes it.
- You can reset or delete the advertising ID in Settings › Google › Ads. The app keeps working if you do.
- In the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, Google's certified consent form is shown before the first ad loads. You can change your choice later from the Privacy options link inside the app.
- How Google processes this data: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
There is no analytics (Firebase Analytics and the like), no crash reporting (Crashlytics and the like) and no marketing tracker. How you use the app is never reported to the developer.
6. Permissions
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | So the daily check of the USCIS page waits until the phone is online, and so the ad library can see the connection state. |
INTERNET | For ads, and to read USCIS's public “Check for Test Updates” page at most once a day. Your study progress never leaves the device and the app has no server of its own. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS | For the study reminder you turn on and the alert when USCIS changes an answer. |
READ_BASIC_PHONE_STATE | So the ads library can tell Wi-Fi from mobile data. It grants no access to your phone number, IMEI or call log; the app does not declare it, the ads library adds it. |
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED | So the reminder and the daily check resume after the phone restarts. |
RECORD_AUDIO | Only for “Answer out loud”, asked the first time you use it: the phone's on-device speech recognizer listens while the indicator is on. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent. |
VIBRATE | To vibrate when a notification arrives. |
WAKE_LOCK | So the phone does not fall asleep in the middle of a check. The app does not ask for this itself; the background work library (Android Jetpack WorkManager) adds it. |
BILLING | So you can buy a paid membership through Google Play. The app does not declare this permission itself; the Google Play Billing library adds it. Your payment details (card, address, invoice) never reach the app and are never seen or stored by it — Google Play takes the payment. All the app learns is whether your membership is active. |
AD_ID | Ads in the free tier are served by Google AdMob, which may read the device advertising ID (AAID). The app does not declare this permission itself; the ads library adds it. Paid members make no ad request at all. You can reset or delete the ID in Settings › Google › Ads. |
7. Payment and membership
If you buy a paid membership, the payment is handled by Google Play. Your card details are never entered into the app and are never seen by the developer.
Monthly and yearly memberships renew automatically; Google Play charges your account at the start of each period. The lifetime membership is a one-off purchase and does not renew. You can cancel a subscription at any time in Google Play Store › Menu › Subscriptions; cancelling takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for. Refunds are also handled by Google Play — the developer has no access to the payment.
The app has no server of its own. Whether your membership is active is read again every time the app asks Google Play (when you open the app and when you view the membership screen). That is why a cancellation or refund closes the membership the next time you open the app. If you changed device, Restore purchases on the membership screen brings back a purchase made with the same Google account.
8. Children
The app is not directed to children. The developer collects no data from anyone; the advertising data described in §5 is processed by Google.
9. Keeping and deleting your data
Everything the app stores stays on your device; there is no account and no server copy. Clearing the app’s storage, or uninstalling the app, deletes everything it has ever kept — nothing survives elsewhere, so there is no separate deletion request to make. A paid membership is held by Google Play, not by the app: it survives reinstalling and can be brought back with Restore purchases.
10. Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
11. Contact
12. This app in detail
The sections above apply to every app by this developer. What follows is written for this app only and describes exactly what it records, what it never records and what it will not claim.
Where the questions and answers come from The 2025 civics test (128 questions), the 2008 civics test (100 questions), their official answers, the 65/20 questions, the reading and writing vocabulary, the study guide text and the wording of Form N-400 are packaged with the app as USCIS published them (works of the U.S. government, 17 U.S.C. 105). Answers that depend on who holds office are checked against USCIS's "Check for Test Updates" page at most once a day; if one changes, the card is updated and put back in your review and, unless you turned the alert off, you get a notification. The state answers (senators, representative, governor, capital) come from lists packaged with the app; the date of those lists is shown in Settings. Answering out loud When you tap "Answer out loud", your phone's own on-device speech recognizer turns your voice into text. The app receives only that text, shows it to you next to the official answers and keeps nothing: no recording is made, stored or sent. The microphone permission is asked the first time you use the feature, and the microphone is used only while the listening indicator is on. The feature needs Android 12 or newer and a phone with an on-device speech recognizer; without one the app says so and the feature stays off. Read aloud Read aloud uses your phone's own text-to-speech voice that works offline; the app does not download voices. Hands-free play can read each card up to three times and shuffle the cards that come next; the setting is stored with your study settings. Typing your answer In a round with "Type your answers" on, what you type is compared on the phone with the official answers and shown next to them. The app does not save it: only whether you graded the answer right or wrong is kept, as in any other round. Application checklist The checklist shows USCIS's own "10 Steps to Naturalization" page word for word, with the date USCIS last reviewed it, and a box for each step and each "What to do" item. The app keeps only which boxes you ticked - no dates, no receipt or case number, nothing about your documents. "Clear the checklist" removes every tick. The page's own links (including myaccount.uscis.gov) open in your browser only when you tap them. PDF study guide The PDF study guide is made on your phone from the questions and the answers the app shows you, including your state's officials. It is written only where you choose on the system Save screen; the app keeps no copy and sends it nowhere. If the place you choose belongs to a cloud service, that service stores the file, not the developer. What the app never asks for It never asks for your name, A-number, receipt or case number, or your answers to Form N-400, and it never submits anything to USCIS. The N-400 filing date and the interview date are optional; they only choose the test version and drive the countdown and the daily target. Resetting "Reset progress" in Settings deletes your study history immediately.
