A complaint about noise is answered with “prove it”. A phone microphone is not a calibrated Class 1 meter and this app says so — but a timestamped series of readings taken over several nights is still the difference between a complaint and a record.
This is NOT a calibrated sound level meter. Phone microphones differ and clip at both ends of the scale, so a reading is indicative and is not legal evidence. For an official complaint ask the authority for a calibrated measurement.
What it does
- No audio is recorded or uploaded — only the dB numbers stay, on your phone
- Live dB reading and a graph of the last 60 seconds, or a gauge, a 1/3-octave spectrum or a spectrogram
- A, B, C, ITU-R 468 or flat weighting; Fast, Slow or Impulse response
- Pause and resume; elapsed and paused time are shown and saved
- A level alert that vibrates or beeps, without measuring its own sound
- Compact view, and an upside-down screen to point the microphone at the source
- Each measurement's whole graph full screen, saved as PNG or per-second CSV
- Statistics: Leq, L10/L50/L90, a 5 dB distribution, by place, hour and weekday
- Calibration offset up to 50 dB either way
- A scheduled reminder, so the 23:40 reading actually gets taken
- A PDF report with the method, the limitations and the limit you enter with its source
- CSV export of every measurement, free on every plan
- Unprocessed microphone input first, so gain control cannot flatten the levels
- Silence and time off the screen are left out, not counted as quiet
How you set it up
- On the Measure tab, type where you are (bedroom, shop) and tap Start. The microphone permission is asked at this moment, not when the app opens.
- Watch the live level and the chart of the last 60 seconds, then tap “Stop and save”, or “Discard” to drop the session.
- On the Log tab, open a saved session to see its Leq, peak and duration and to add a note.
- On the Report tab, enter the limit that applies to you and where it comes from, then export the CSV (free on every plan) or the PDF report (paid plan, or 24 hours after a rewarded ad).
- In Settings, switch on the daily reminder, set a calibration offset if you have a reference meter you trust, and write a backup file before changing phones.
Who it is for
Neighbours, tenants and site workers who need an environmental noise record over time.
What a measurement holds
- Start and end time, the energy average (Leq), the loudest second and the quietest second.
- One level for every second, up to 1,800 of them (about 30 minutes). The report draws its chart from these values.
- Your location label and note, the offset that was in use and whether it was calibrated.
- No sound itself: each block from the microphone becomes a number and is thrown away.
Where the data comes from and when it changes
- The phone's own microphone, read as 16-bit mono at 44,100 samples per second in 100 ms blocks, only while you are measuring on screen.
- The number on screen and the 60-second chart move with every block; one value per second goes into the saved session.
- dB values are an estimate: raw level plus an offset that starts at a nominal value. Until you change it against a reference, every session is marked NOT CALIBRATED.
- Nothing runs in the background: the daily reminder only asks you to measure.
Feature details
- It asks Android for the unprocessed microphone input first, so automatic gain control cannot flatten loud and quiet parts. Where a phone refuses, it falls back to the normal input and says so on screen.
- Sessions and reminders stay on the phone. No server is contacted to measure or to build a report, and a backup goes only into a file you pick.
- No legal threshold is built in. The report prints the limit you typed, its source and how many sessions were at or above it.
- A daily reminder at the time you set (21:00 until you change it), with a “Later” action that asks again an hour later.
- Time when the microphone sent pure digital silence, or the app was off the screen, is left out instead of being counted as quiet, and the screen tells you part was not recorded.
- The current level can be read as a number or on an analog gauge with a needle; the Display card switches between “Digital” and “Gauge”.
- While you measure, an “Elapsed” line shows the measured time; time spent paused is not counted.
- “Pause” turns the microphone off without ending the measurement and “Resume” continues the same one. Paused time is not measured; the record and the PDF list it on a separate “Paused (not measured)” line.
- Frequency weighting A, B, C, ITU-R 468 or Z (flat), chosen under “Meter settings” on the Measure tab. A follows how loud people hear a noise and is the one most noise rules use; C keeps the bass. The weighting is saved with each measurement, its per-second CSV and the PDF. It does not correct the phone's own microphone, so every figure stays an estimate.
- Time weighting Fast (125 ms), Slow (1 s) or Impulse (35 ms rise, 1.5 s fall): Fast follows quick changes, Slow steadies the number, Impulse catches short bangs. The live screen shows the pair in use, for example “A · Fast”, and a running measurement keeps the settings it started with.
- Spectrum view: the sound split into 1/3-octave bands from 50 Hz to 16 kHz, worked out on the phone and only while that view is open.
- Spectrogram view: the last 10 seconds as a picture of time against frequency, 50 Hz at the bottom and 16 kHz at the top; dark means quiet and red means loud.
- Level alert in Settings: enter a level in dB and choose vibrate, beep or both. While you are measuring on screen the phone alerts you when the live level reaches it, at most every 5 seconds, and the 0.8 seconds around each alert are left out of the record so the app does not measure its own beep or vibration.
- “Upside-down screen” turns the screen 180°, so you can point the microphone at the bottom of the phone towards the sound and still read the level.
- “Compact view” leaves only the level, the elapsed time and the buttons on the Measure screen; the meter settings and the scale card are hidden.
- The calibration offset can be set up to 50 dB above or below the nominal value, in steps of 0.1 dB or 1 dB with the buttons, and the screen shows the correction next to the allowed range.
- Statistics on the Log tab sum up every saved measurement: their number, the total measured time, an overall Leq in which each measurement counts by its length, L10, L50 and L90, the loudest places, and levels by hour of day and by weekday. Measurements taken with different frequency weightings are shown separately.
- The record of each measurement shows how its seconds spread over 5 dB bands, empty bands included, as a share of the time, with L10 (the loud moments), L50 and L90 (the background) below it.
- The record also draws the whole measurement as a graph, with the loudest second marked and your limit as a dashed line; “Full screen” opens the graph in its own window.
- “Save graph (PNG)” writes this graph as a 2400 × 1200 image headed with the place, start time, Leq, peak and weighting; “Save seconds (CSV)” writes one row per measured second with the columns second, level_db and frequency_weighting. Both are free on every plan and go only to the file you pick.
What it does not do
- It gives no professional advice and makes no decision for you — it shows you your own numbers.
- It asks for no account. No sign-up, no password.
- The developer collects no personal data and adds no analytics or crash reporting. In the free version the Google Mobile Ads SDK collects IP address, app interactions, diagnostics and device IDs (see Data safety).
- The free tier shows Google AdMob ads: a bottom banner, rewarded ads you start yourself and an “Ad”-labelled card inside the list; no full-screen ads between pages or on launch.
Version history
0.6.0 (2026-10-09)
- Tap a locked feature's note for an optional rewarded ad that unlocks it; skip it and the lock stays.
0.5.0 (2026-10-06)
- Fixed: the note under a locked PDF export pointed to a rewarded ad "above"; the 24-hour unlock is offered at the bottom of the screen, and the note now says so.
- Measuring, the log and both exports (PDF, CSV) work as before.
0.4.0 (2026-09-27)
- New: a live graph of the last 60 seconds while you measure.
- New: export every measurement as CSV for any spreadsheet — free on every plan.
- Results of your actions now always appear above the ad strip; saving a label, note or reminder time shows a confirmation.
- Ads: no screen shift from late cards, no full-screen ad when memory is low, none started for paid members; ads library updated.
- Changing the language keeps you on the same tab.
Permissions
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | So the ad library can see the connection state. Your entries do not use the network. |
INTERNET | For ads ONLY. Your entries never leave the device and the app has no server of its own. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS | To remind you about the dates and reminders you set yourself. |
READ_BASIC_PHONE_STATE | So the ads library can tell Wi-Fi from mobile data. It grants no access to your phone number, IMEI or call log; the app does not declare it, the ads library adds it. |
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED | So your reminders keep working after the phone restarts. |
RECORD_AUDIO | To measure the sound level. Audio is analysed as it arrives and is never recorded, saved or transmitted. |
VIBRATE | To vibrate when a notification arrives. |
WAKE_LOCK | So the phone does not fall asleep in the middle of a check. The app does not ask for this itself; the background work library (Android Jetpack WorkManager) adds it. |
BILLING | So you can buy a paid membership through Google Play. The app does not declare this permission itself; the Google Play Billing library adds it. Your payment details (card, address, invoice) never reach the app and are never seen or stored by it — Google Play takes the payment. All the app learns is whether your membership is active. |
AD_ID | Ads in the free tier are served by Google AdMob, which may read the device advertising ID (AAID). The app does not declare this permission itself; the ads library adds it. Paid members make no ad request at all. You can reset or delete the ID in Settings › Google › Ads. |
