Course Seat & Waitlist Alert
Hear when a seat opens in a full course.
com.ibrahimtxy.seatalert · Education
A full course does not always stay full: seats open when students drop, often in the first weeks of term. Catching one by hand means refreshing the class search at the right minute. This app checks your school's public class search for you and tells you when a section opens and seats are available again.
This app never signs in to your student account, never asks for your student ID or password, and never registers you for a class. It reads the same public class-search page you can open in a browser without signing in, and tells you when a seat opens. You enroll yourself, in your school's own system.
What it does
- Pick campus, term, subject and course number — every list comes from your school's own public class search, not from a copy we keep
- Not tied to a fixed list of schools: if your school's public class search runs on Banner, paste its link and the app reads it, once its robots.txt allows it
- Get told when a section flips from full to open, with the seats that opened and when it meets
- See each section's meeting days and times, in the list and in your backups
- Mark your first-choice section; if it is full, the app lists the same course's other sections that have seats now, most seats first — no extra requests
- Optionally get waitlist openings too
- One request per course no matter how many sections it has
How you set it up
You create one watch — for example “Temple University · 2026 Fall · CIS 1068” — and close the app. At the interval you choose it checks section seat counts; when a seat opens your phone gets a notification. It never tells you about the same thing twice.
Who it is for
Undergraduates who need one specific section to graduate on time — and advisors who get asked about it.
What it does not do
- It does NOT register, reserve or hold a seat. It points you at your school's own system; you enroll there yourself.
- It does NOT sign in to your student account and never asks for your student ID or password.
- It asks for no account. No sign-up, no password.
- The developer collects no personal data and adds no analytics or crash reporting. In the free version the Google Mobile Ads SDK collects IP address, app interactions, diagnostics and device IDs (see Data safety).
- The free tier shows Google AdMob ads: a bottom banner, rewarded ads you start yourself and an “Ad”-labelled card inside the list; no full-screen ads between pages or on launch. Paid members see no ads and no ad request is made.
Version history
0.32.0 (2026-10-25)
- New: every section shows its weekly meeting days and times (e.g. Mon/Wed/Fri 10:10–11:30 AM) in the list and in your backups, and the seat alert says when the section meets. Times come from your school's own class search, in the school's local time.
0.31.0 (2026-10-16)
- Fix: at some schools (measured at Temple) course search and watches could fail with “Banner returned a null result set”; the app now opens a fresh connection for each request, so the school keeps your search session.
0.30.0 (2026-10-09)
- New watches get their first check without waiting for the next round; the daily data estimate is no longer too low.
- Free watches full? An optional rewarded ad adds 2 more watches for 24 hours.
0.29.0 (2026-10-07)
- Campus picker: the field for a school that is not listed has a shorter label that fits on one line when empty, shows the expected address while you type, and the note below says what to paste.
0.28.0 (2026-09-27)
- New: mark your first-choice section; if it is full, sections of the same course with seats are listed as backups (no extra requests).
- A pasted school is read only if its robots.txt allows it.
- Check results now appear above the ad strip; re-entering a school keeps your picks.
- Ads: no screen shift from late cards, no full-screen ad when memory is low, none started for paid members.
- Update and rating windows no longer overlap; changing the language keeps your tab.
Permissions
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | To avoid pointless attempts while offline, and to tell mobile data from Wi-Fi. |
INTERNET | To reach the class-search page of the school you picked. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS | To tell you a seat opened. That is the whole app. |
READ_BASIC_PHONE_STATE | So the ads library can tell Wi-Fi from mobile data. It grants no access to your phone number, IMEI or call log; the app does not declare it, the ads library adds it. |
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED | So your watches resume after the phone restarts. |
VIBRATE | To vibrate when a notification arrives. |
WAKE_LOCK | So the phone does not fall asleep in the middle of a check. The app does not ask for this itself; the background work library (Android Jetpack WorkManager) adds it. |
BILLING | So you can buy a paid membership through Google Play. The app does not declare this permission itself; the Google Play Billing library adds it. Your payment details (card, address, invoice) never reach the app and are never seen or stored by it — Google Play takes the payment. All the app learns is whether your membership is active. |
AD_ID | Ads in the free tier are served by Google AdMob, which may read the device advertising ID (AAID). The app does not declare this permission itself; the ads library adds it. Paid members make no ad request at all. You can reset or delete the ID in Settings › Google › Ads. |
