Product Recall Alerts
Know when a CPSC recall or a UK food alert names something you watch.
com.ibrahimtxy.productrecall · House & Home
The CPSC publishes its safety recalls, and the UK Food Standards Agency its food recall warnings and allergy alerts, as open data. This app checks both for the products, foods and allergens you enter.
This app is NOT affiliated with the CPSC or the FSA and is NOT medical advice. A recall covers particular models, batches or packs; only the label on your own item says whether it is inside one. If you have a food allergy, act on the FSA notice, not on this app.
What it does
- Watch a US product by name, recall title, notice text or store
- Or follow a whole category (baby & kids, furniture…) by the CPSC's own product type
- See where each recall was sold; filter by remedy, Canada, UK nation and date
- My products: check what you own against recent recalls; see a brand's recall history
- Recalls you open stay readable offline, with remedy and contact
- Alerts you again when a recall later adds a refund
- UK food: matching also reads the declared allergen list — 23 of 256 alerts (Jan 2025–Sep 2026) named an allergen only there
- UK food: an allergy profile per person from the FSA's 27 allergens; your word stays on the phone
How you set it up
You create one watch — for example “crib, cot or play yard” — and close the app. At the interval you choose it checks US product recalls and UK food alerts; when a recall or food alert matching your watch is published your phone gets a notification. It never tells you about the same thing twice.
Who it is for
Parents, anyone furnishing a home or buying used, and UK families with allergies.
What it does not do
- It does NOT arrange refunds, replacements or repairs; the official notice names who does.
- It is NOT medical or dietary advice; a quiet week never means a food is safe.
- It does NOT sign in and never asks for purchase receipts or personal details.
- It asks for no account. No sign-up, no password.
- The developer collects no personal data and adds no analytics or crash reporting. In the free version the Google Mobile Ads SDK collects IP address, app interactions, diagnostics and device IDs (see Data safety).
- The free tier shows Google AdMob ads: a bottom banner, rewarded ads you start yourself and an “Ad”-labelled card inside the list; no full-screen ads between pages or on launch. Paid members see no ads and no ad request is made.
Version history
0.10.0 (2026-10-25)
- New: follow a whole category (baby & kids, furniture, heating, electronics...) by the CPSC's own product type, no keyword needed; every card says where the product was sold, and you can search by store.
- New: My products (list what you own, check it against the last 60 days of recalls, see a brand's history); recalls you open stay readable offline; filters for remedy, Canada, UK nation and date.
0.9.0 (2026-10-23)
- New: allergy profiles for UK food alerts — pick from the FSA's own 27 allergens (each tree nut and cereal by name); a profile only hears alerts whose official allergen list names one of them, so “Tree nuts” is not set off by a peanut alert.
- New: one profile per person in the family — give it a name (e.g. Sam) and the notification says whose profile the alert concerns. Profiles stay on your phone.
0.8.0 (2026-10-17)
- The data note in Settings no longer quotes old one-off sizes: it points to the Data usage card, where your phone measures what your own checks cost, and explains why a keyword is required.
0.7.0 (2026-10-11)
- New source: UK food recalls and allergy alerts from the Food Standards Agency, in the same app; pick the source at the top of the form.
- For UK food your word is matched on the phone and sent nowhere; an empty box watches every alert. The declared allergen list is read too.
- Your existing US product watches are unchanged.
- If one source is down, the other still notifies you; the health notice names the source that failed.
0.6.0 (2026-10-09)
- Changing the language no longer sends you back to the first tab.
- With a paid membership, the ad-consent check and ads SDK no longer start at launch.
- No new full-screen ad loads while memory is low, fixing a crash.
- New watches get their first check without waiting for the next round; the daily data estimate is no longer too low.
- Free watches full? An optional rewarded ad adds 2 more watches for 24 hours.
Permissions
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | To avoid pointless attempts while offline, and to tell mobile data from Wi-Fi. |
INTERNET | To reach the public CPSC recall list and FSA food alerts list. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS | To tell you a recall or food alert matching your watch was published. That is the whole app. |
READ_BASIC_PHONE_STATE | So the ads library can tell Wi-Fi from mobile data. It grants no access to your phone number, IMEI or call log; the app does not declare it, the ads library adds it. |
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED | So your watches resume after the phone restarts. |
VIBRATE | To vibrate when a notification arrives. |
WAKE_LOCK | So the phone does not fall asleep in the middle of a check. The app does not ask for this itself; the background work library (Android Jetpack WorkManager) adds it. |
BILLING | So you can buy a paid membership through Google Play. The app does not declare this permission itself; the Google Play Billing library adds it. Your payment details (card, address, invoice) never reach the app and are never seen or stored by it — Google Play takes the payment. All the app learns is whether your membership is active. |
AD_ID | Ads in the free tier are served by Google AdMob, which may read the device advertising ID (AAID). The app does not declare this permission itself; the ads library adds it. Paid members make no ad request at all. You can reset or delete the ID in Settings › Google › Ads. |
